Charles Christian Rosenberg, also known as Carl Rosenberg of Bath, was born in Austria and moved to England as a young boy as part of Queen Charlotte’s retinue. Works by Rosenberg in the Royal Collection include silhouettes of the Princess Royal and of Princesses Augusta, Elizabeth and Sophia, painted during their stay at Cheltenham in 1788. Other royal commissions followed and Rosenberg used the title 'Profile Painter to their Majesties and Royal Family' throughout the 1790s. He settled in Bath around 1787 and became one of the most successful and prolific silhouette artists of his time.

Condition Report

There is a slight curve to the glass, although it's difficult to photograph. Some slight loss to the paint to the bottom right which is just about covered by the frame. Otherwise the paint is in very good condition. Evidence of pest to the silk backing but nothing that appears active. Frame with a couple of small losses and signs of wear. Historic woodworm to the back board. Overall in good condition and ready to hang.

Together with a separate framed typewritten label reading 'This extremely interesting silhouette painted on convex glass dates to the 1790s and shows three royal Knights of the Order of the Garter, sons of George III. This Order consists of the monarch, twenty-five Knight Companions and such lineal descendants of George I as may be elected. The members of the royal family shown here from right to left are, in order of precedence: the unmarried Prince of Wales, later George IV, in the highest position, followed by two of his brothers (according to G.M. Willis they are probably the princes William and Edward, invested on 2nd June 1786, and finally, on the lowest step, Mrs. Fitzherbert. The silhouette is of a type very fashionable in the 1790s.', 16.5 x 13.5cm.
