One of the finest portraitists of the 18th century. Born in Edinburgh, Ramsay travelled Europe spending time in Rome and Naples before returning to Edinburgh. His style is characterised by his excellent draftsmanship, the fine rendering of fabrics and a real attention to the individuality of his subjects, making them appear more than a simple likeness. He painted many royal portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte and was remembered by his friend Samuel Johnson: ‘I love Ramsay. You will not find a man in whose conversation there is more instruction, more information, and more elegance, than in Ramsay's.’
