The term 'Ziegler' refers to a particular design pattern and style of weaving. The Ziegler carpet is often characterised by a soft, muted colour palette and elegant, delicate designs. They often feature repetitive floral and geometric patterns, and large central medallions. The colours are usually the result of vegetable-based dyes, which elicit a distinctive soft and warm hue.
The origin of the style and craftmanship of these carpets can be traced back to the late 19th century and a German company based in England called Ziegler & Co. This company began to produce fine and high-quality carpets in the Sultanabad region of Iran, where their aim was to successfully marry Western tastes with the aesthetic and craftsmanship of Persia. The popularity and success of Ziegler carpets grew significantly during the 20th century, however, production in Iran ground to a halt due to political unrest and economic sanctions. As a result, Ziegler & Co. moved production to countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, where skilled craftsmen continue to create these exquisite rugs.
After the death of Duleep Singh in 1893, the estate of Elveden was bought by Edward Guinness, the first Earl of Iveagh. After this transition, the house was lavishly refurbished in 1894, and included the purchase of twenty-three Ziegler carpets. In 1984, many of these beautifully made carpets were sold, with the larger selling for prices more than £30,000 each, ensuring that Ziegler carpets are still considered to be the most desirable weavings on the market. Today, Sworders is extremely pleased to be a part of the history of Elveden and its Ziegler carpet collection.
