MINING SATIRE: Mining & Miners

MINING SATIRE:
Mining & Miners, and Diggers & Priggers. By a Shareholder. London: W. Kent & Co., 1854, first edition of a very rare satire, complete with 15 lithograph plates (Kurutz calls for only 13). 8vo. pp: 28, and errata slip at end. An extremely amusing and rare satire on the heights of folly that accompanied the California Gold Rush, personified in the character of 'Tom Tiddler.' ‘The author lampoons gold companies, like the delightful 'Great Doo and Diddle Gold, Silver, Copper, and Brass, Smash, Dash and Crash Company,' and comments on the feverish effect of the word 'gold' on people's imagination. 'Prigger' is defined as a thief. 'Tom Tiddler' can be translated as any place where pickings may be sought or had without effective interference’ - Howell. ‘This satirical piece is based on the experience of the English who invested in California and Australian mines. The company's holdings were located in the 'Moschetto and Torpedo Districts' of California’ - Kurutz; BOUND WITH: Watson, Joseph Yelloly: The Progress of Mining in 1854, with remarks upon the failure of gold mining in England. Truscott, 1855, 1st edn; PP: 33, (I); BOUND WITH: Scinde Railway - a letter from... W H Allen, 1854, 1st edn; PP:11, (i) blank; BOUND WITH: Roe, J: Further Report ... in respect of that portion of the main intercepting drainage, called the Northern Drainage. By Authority, J. Truscott, 1855, 1st. edn; PP: 11, (i) blank; BOUND WITH: Bazalgette, J W: Data employed in determining the sizes and estimating the cost of the works designed for the Main Drainage of the Metropolis. By Authority, J Truscott, 1855, 1st edn; PP: 19, and 3 folding tables (all torn and two with loss). All five pamphlets bound in one contemporary half leather volume, rubbed; the Armorial bookplate of Joseph Yelloly Watson (author of the second work) to front pastedown. O/W G+.
