A collection of five Chinese oil paintings

A collection of five Chinese oil paintings, of the Elders of the San Francisco China Town, including three by Wahso Chan (1911-1937), signed W H Chan, one by P C Chan and one by P Chun, various sizes, largest 50 x 39cm, framed (5)

Wahso Chan was born in Canton, China in 1911 and moved to California with his family in 1912. He earned a teaching degree from UC Berkeley and further studied at the CSFA 1929-32. During the Depression he worked as a recreation leader for the WPA. He died of a car crash in San Francisco's Chinatown on 27 June 27 1937.

All seen under UV: all flouresce so it is difficult to tell if there is much retouching.
Lady wearing a hat: some light cracking of the paint lower left. A small hole in the background to the right of the ear, but this appears to be painted over so may have occured at the time of the artist.
Seated man smoking a pipe: a little light wave in upper right corner and an air bubble running down the right edge. A small area of damage right edge, with some retouching. Some cloudy smears to the surface of the painting, a little dust, and a few very small rubs to the surface.
Man smoking pipe: a few dabs of retouching in places over thin or damaged spots. The background floureseces strongly.
Bearded man in black hat: a few tiny flakes of paint loss in upper right quarter, minor. A few other areas of thin paint. No other obvious flaws.
Lady wearing purple: the top unpainted edge is visible. A few light rubs to the paint, including above her head. Some cloudy smears on the surface of the paint.

Buying a pre-loved, antique, or vintage item not only provides you with unique style and value for money but it also helps to reduce landfill, and the annual emissions of an antique or vintage piece can be as little as one sixteenth of those of its new equivalent!
