Condition Report

Overall: 173 x 149cm
The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The lining has emphasised the canvas weave which is prominent in the paint texture. The paint layers are in a stable condition overall. There is a network of age cracks present across the surface. In some areas the cracking is deep, creating an uneven texture to the surface with a few small, scattered losses, which are historic. There may be some abrasion to the upper paint layers affecting the graduation of tone, for example, in the female figures face where the shift into shadow may have been more subtle. This could also be due to degradation of the pigment over time. But the dark appearance of the flesh tones is, in part, due to the technique of the artist. Areas of overpaint are localised and mainly cover small areas of damage. In small areas overpaint reinforces the composition in the darker areas, for example the right hand of the male figure. The varnish has been thickly applied and is clear and very glossy. The surface texture is unusual and it seems likely that this is partly caused by the varnish application, creating an ‘orange-peel’ effect to the surface.
