Albert Edward Harris (1865-1951)

Portraits of Indian princes, possibly from Cossimbazar, three-quarter-length standing
a pair, one signed and dated ‘A E Harris/1907’ l.r., oil on canvas
125 x 102cm (2)

Provenance: From an Indian private collection.

Both figures are shown wearing the same diamond-studded turban sarpech adorned with egret feathers. The elder maharajah is distinguished by three medals: the 1903 Delhi Durbar Medal, the 1875 Royal Visit Medal (commemorating the visit of HRH Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales), and the Empress of India Medal, awarded at the 1877 Imperial Assemblage in Delhi when HM Queen Victoria was declared Empress of India.

Birmingham born artist, A E Harris, arrived in Bombay in 1890. He then joined the photographers Johnson and Hoffman, before relocating to Calcutta in 1897. It was here that he established his own portrait studio, and painted numerous oil portraits of Indian princes and British administrators.
