A Royal Horse Artillery Captain's dress jacket and busby hat
19th/20th century,

the black sable busby with scarlet bag, gold cords and a white plume on a metal shaft, labelled 'Hawkes & Co 'Helmet Cap', with its calico carrying bag and tin bearing engraved plaque inscribed 'Capt FW Gosset RHA', with a cast Hawkins & Co label, the Eton cut officers full dress tunic made from dark blue cloth, edged with gilt cord with scarlet cloth collar having silvered grenades and edged with RA gilt lace, the front with eighteen brass buttons, with two epaulettes and two belts

Footnote:

Francis William Gosett on 20 October 1876, son of Francis Russell Gossett, Deputy Sergeant-at-Arms, House of Commons. He was educated at Marlborough College, The Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and at the Staff College, Camberley. He joined the army on 2 November, 1895, and served on the staff in the South African War, as Staff-Captain, Intelligence, and was present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including actions at Colenso, Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz and Pieter’s Hill; in Natal including action at Laing’s Nek; also in the Transvaal, Orange River Colony, and on the Zululand Frontier of Natal.
He was Adjutant, Royal Horse Artillery, Woolwich, in 1908-09 and passed Staff College, Camberley, in 1911. He served in the Great War, and on 31 October 1914, he was severely wounded at Ypres. He served in France again, in 1915. And after the war, served in post-war Europe, and then as Military Expert attached to the British Embassy, Berlin, 1927-30

Condition Report

Box - with wear and old labels. Hat fair overall, chin strap tied and shortened. The leather strap tied and knotted and worn in this area. One small patch of white dust to the top of the hat - can be removed with cleaning. The best with heavy staining and worn. The case worn and missing closing pin. Dented and rusted throughout.
Jacket - fair overall, inside stitching fair. Some marks to the surface and a collection of dust and animal fur. The leather strap with loose stitching. Some staining on the collar area. Of small size. Some staining to the inside. The added belts and tassel in the hat box are worn. Kings crown to the buttons.
