Lorenzo Quinn is a renowned contemporary Italian artist known for his sculptures that often explore themes of human emotions, relationships and environmental issues. Born on May 7, 1966, in Rome, Italy, Quinn is the son of the famous actor Anthony Quinn and his second wife, the costume designer Jolanda Addolori.

Quinn began his artistic journey at a young age, influenced by his father's artistic background and the vibrant cultural scene of Rome. He initially gained recognition as an actor in Italy and the United States before fully dedicating himself to sculpture in the late 1980s having studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in New York.

Throughout his career, Quinn has produced a diverse body of work encompassing various materials, including bronze, stainless steel, aluminium, and resin. He is particularly acclaimed for his monumental sculptures that often feature expressive human figures engaged in dynamic poses or interactions.

One of Quinn's most famous series is ‘The Force of Nature’ which comprises large-scale sculptures depicting hands engaged in various gestures, symbolizing the power of nature and its human connection. These sculptures have been installed in prominent locations around the world, including Venice, London and Monaco.

Three of his works offered in our Design sale are from the ‘Love Series’ and are formed from the idea of enduring love and passion, that can never be vanquished, ‘For nothing can destroy what has been created by the heart’. Two others are from the ‘Gravity’ series, again following the idea that balance is only formed from strong relationships with others. These five are estimated at £2,000-3,000 each.

The largest work in the auction is ‘Four Loves’ which was inspired when Quinn was reading C.S. Lewis’s ‘Four Loves’.

He explains: ‘and decided to present the Loves as the foundation stones on which the weight of the World should be supported. The first stone, representing Faith, Affection and Love (Agape), is made out of polished bronze so as to look pure. The second stone symbolises passionate love (Eros), for which I have used red stone, strong yet fragile on its own. The third is Friendship (Philia), and I have created this in polished stainless steel, because you are reflected in your friends. Finally, the fourth represents family love (Storge), and I have made this one out of wood, a warm material, because it is live, organic and grows’. On top of these stones you build your world, which is a complex puzzle that has to be assembled. And finally, when you put this all together, you build your relationship, and if you then manage to keep in perfect balance you achieve the ultimate goal of having a long-lasting relationship which is magical and more precious than gold.’

Quinn's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums globally, and he has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to the art world. He continues to create thought-provoking sculptures that resonate with audiences worldwide, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of the human experience and our relationship with the natural world.
