Prior to our forthcoming Jewellery auction on 26 February, we are absolutely thrilled to share one of its highlights: a Victorian emerald and diamond crowned heart ring. Featuring a pear-shaped emerald adorned with rose-cut diamonds, it is in exceptional condition for its age. The emerald's attention grabbing bright green hue stands out from the silver-topped setting and the original patina permeates the ring with history and romance. For centuries the crowned heart symbol has served as a powerful emblem of love and fidelity, where the heart represents love and the crown signifies loyalty. Whilst engagement rings were not common until Victorian times, crowned heart rings set with rose cut diamonds or rock crystals were used since late 17th century as betrothal rings. They were also utilised in mourning jewellery.

Queen Victoria cherished her emerald birthstone in turn the gemstone reflected her vivacious personality and love and appreciation of nature. Displaying vivid hues and rarity, it symbolises rebirth and unconditional love, further adding to its desirability. This vibrant gem featured in her engagement ring and in a magnificent suite of jewellery commissioned for her by Prince Albert. Entwined in the well-documented love story between Victoria and Albert, emeralds expressed the romantic ideals of the era and the fascination with gemstones at this time. Queen Victoria’s passion for the gem is a testament to her unique taste and her appreciation of the artistic excellence of Victorian jewellery. In her role as both monarch and style icon, Queen Victoria’s influence on the fashion of the day should not be underestimated.
