The Anderson workshop, founded in Bristol in the early 19th century after a relocation from Rotherhithe, first rose to prominence as a carver of ships' figureheads. With the decline of wooden ships towards the turn of the last century, the firm diversified, embracing the steam revolution and turning its hand to the production of carousel and fairground mounts. Their style was typified with burgeoning scrolling decoration, grotesque masks and mythical beasts often worked into the bodies of the animals, creating surreal and marvellous creatures.
